Blog Post 6: Bros Before Hoes

"Bros before Hoes" This term is a commonly referred to section of the "unwritten" "Man code" which refers to Men putting their friends or "brothers" before women. As it is respectful of one to treat those whose friendship was earned and is now respected above a woman who has not earned it.  For me it means man should prioritize his male friends over his girlfriend or any significant other. 

As I was reading this article about The Scientific Rationale for Bros Before Hoes by Tamburlaine. It discusses the rise and fall of testosterone levels in men based upon with whom they are interacting. And the authors main conclusion is “adult males usually elevate testosterone when interacting with adult women who are potential mates, but in a striking reversal, they have lower testosterone if the woman is a conjugal partner of a close friend”. If your testosterone levels drop while interacting with the mate of a close friend, this will obviously lower your sex drive, general aggression, etc. and this implications for precisely how and why men form and maintain bonds, Also that’s the main idea how the saying Bros before Hoes is made.

I don’t really think that these scientific facts really apply for Barney because he hits on his best friend’s sister, mother and also with his ex girlfriend. But with Ted Mosby it shows that it really applies. He never hits on Barney’s ex girlfriends or even just by knowing that it was Barney’s ex Ted will automatically ignore the girl.

The next article that I've read is about Bros Before Hoes in Masculinity by Poop53 this article discusses about Bros before Hos in Feminism that Even if there are some men who can accept equality among men and women, but the majority of men will never fully endorse women’s equality. This is not because most men are pigs looking to degrade women, it is because of the concept of the paradox of men’s power. Any men feel in control when they have the support of their fraternity of brothers. Most men are not willing to let their brothers down by siding with pro-feminists.

In one of the episodes in How I Met Your Mother barney said that he can't do this without his best bro Ted Mosby “ Ted were the dynamic duo if your not coming with then I'm just the dynamic uno and whats fun with that” this shows that barney can't move alone without his bro by his side just like the article discussed. Also Ted, Marshall and Barney thinks that they are superior over women in one of the episodes they said to Marshall's fiance Lily that “Men are talking so please”, also a sign of masculinity as the article discussed.
